 Machine Robo: Varigale-X
« Thread Started on Jul 19, 2012, 6:10pm »

I initially did not have any intention of buying this toy since it's not exactly aesthetically eye-cathing. I would say that this is a good example of buying something "because it was being sold a good price".

Varigale-X comes in a box that's 14inches wide by 9.5inches high by 8inches deep. It cost me Php2,000 from a specialty store in Greenhills.

It's a good price considering current Cyberverse playsets cost more. The box has seen better days but from the outside alone, one can see the clear print of "1986 Made in Japan". That stamp alone is something you won't see in most toys these days.

The toys is sandwiched between 2 styrofoam pannels. The box opens to the side to reveal the mug of the vehicle.

Out of the box, we get 1) the toy itself 2) instruction sheet 3) UNUSED sticker sheet! Unfortunately, I'm missing the missiles.

I'm not sure how to describe what sort of vehicle Varigale is. He's a...tank? Truck? Dinosaur on wheels? Anyway, the toy has 6 wheels on either side and all roll smoothly on most, if not all, surfaces.

There are no doors or kibble or weapons hanging out of Varigale's vehicle mode.

I guess the reason why the vehicle mode is interpreted as a "creature mode" is because he's got a complete face.

Just how large it the vehicle mode? Well, here's Varigale beside Megatron. Anyone care to guess what's the size of Megatron?
Even as a Deluxe class toy, Megatron is still in a good scale with Varigale.

I did say that there are no doors. The access way to the interior of the vehicle is via the "front" door/mouth/ramp.
NOTE: The upper part of the mouth is locked to the lower part. There is a small lever on the "chin" are which causes the jaw to open.

The mouth opens to a cavernous interior.

For a change, here's a toy whose vehicle mode can actually carry smaller toys inside it. Varigale can easily carry 2 Legends class TF's with LOTS of room to spare.

To deploy the sides, a small red switch must be moved on either side. The ramp deploys on a click of a button at the back. Talk about 1986 spring-loaded goodness for this guy!

This is Varigale's base mode. It's transformation to base mode is as simple as DOTM Ark's transformation. There are no weapons molded on nor are there any holes which can take in 5mm peg weapons.

There are molded designs on the sides which are lost in the black color of the plastic. There are no decals to highlight these details either.

Basically, Varigale is....a parking lot. Well, maybe you can call him a carrier of sorts but the lack of obvious weaponry makes you wonder how he'll roll into battle (maybe he's got laser beams coming out of those eyes or the horns). Then again, being a Machine Robo design, the lack of obvious weaponry isn't surprising. I bought Varigale for his base mode and that is something he does fairly well.

He makes a good match for Minicon to Legends to Commander class 'bots.

If you're the playset type of guy, then here's an interesting one to add to your line-up!

I think its a recolor of Super Sentai Sun Vulcan's Jaguar Vulcan flying fortress. I dunno if it can also fit the 2 DX Sun Vulcan vehicles inside.
A very nice aquisition if i may say so. [image]

Back in the day, Bandai recycled quite a few Sentai toys for their Machine Robo line, especially for the anime series Machine Robo: The Revenge Of Cronos, where this bad boy appears. From what I remember, the Varigale-X was used by the bad guys of the show.

Its a very good catch, and i love the blocky, sentai inspired, creature-machine blend of machine robo that time, wish they packaged it better than its US counterpart Gobots. The features are both functional for play value, it transforms from a large carrier to a base, acting as a transport is supreme.

Cheers on your review bro! like the pictures, all the possible setups and yes the well written text!
